Location-aware floor plans

What is a location-aware floor plan?

Have you ever tried to use a floor plan at an event and spent a long time simply finding where you are currently standing? Scrolling around looking for nearby landmarks or stand names can put visitors off the digital floor plan experience. Most people are used to the map knowing where they are!

What if you had QR codes at key locations around the event which launch the floorplan on your phone and show your current location? A game-changer, right? Your visitors can focus on where they need to get to, searching by brand name or stand number, then immediately get an efficient route to follow.

Is this difficult to set up?

No. Set up is simple and can be done either onsite or before the event:

  1. You plan your signage to incorporate a QR code and a clear Call To Action
  2. Crowd Connected team supplies as many location-aware QR codes as you need to spread them throughout your show floor.
  3. You scan each QR code with a phone which launches the setup screen for the floor plan.
  4. Input your client code (once), and then place the QR code on the map at the right location.
  5. Repeat for each QR code at your event.
  6. Plus Crowd Connected team will take you through every step and be on hand to help you.

Where is the best place to put the QR codes to get the highest adoption?

Here are some factors to consider:

  • Make sure the location-aware QR codes are available at high-traffic areas such as entrances or crossways between halls and main aisles.
  • Think about the places where visitors will be planning their next destination, such as outside theatres or in seating and food court areas.
  • Leverage the attraction that help desks and 'You are here' boards have when people are trying to navigate by having the QR and clear Call To Action on signage and tent cards.
  • Brief the staff in these areas to get visitors to open the floor plan first using the QR and then help them navigate using the floor plan on their phones. Remind visitors that they will get their new location each time they scan!

What is the best way to communicate the benefits to visitors?

Here are some examples of frames to put around the QR codes. We recommend very simple text focusing on the floor plan first and foremost. Once users scan, they will discover the other benefits as part of a great user experience.

Here are some examples of QR code placements; having a large, bold message on eye-level signage works the best. You can also add floor stickers around the venue to increase the coverage in aisles without needing to place extra signage.

  • Make sure you give the QR code lots of space to be noticed.

  • Large bold signage at entrances is very effective.

  • Place signage around food courts and in main walkways.

  • Floor stickers are an easy way to increase coverage.

  • Use tent cards for info points and seating areas.

  • Make sure you brief staff to direct visitors using the floor plan on their phones!

  • Tent cards in seating areas work because people are thinking about their next move.
